Since today is the beginning of the Papal Conclave, to replace a living Pope that has resigned for the first time in 600 years, I decided to include this piece. It is a departure from my usual format. In the interest of full disclosure, I am not Catholic, but I do study Church History which includes Catholicism.
Today, the Conclave to select the next Pope begins. Father Malachi Martin wrote a book in 1978 named The Final Conclave about the political intrigue behind the Conclave. Martin was a Irish Jesuit priest, an archaeologist, and he wrote one of the seminal works on the Dead Sea Scrolls, The Scribal Character of the Dead Sea Scrolls, in 1958.
He also worked on deciphering the Byblos syllabary -a hieroglyphic-like inscription found at Megiddo (The Plains of Megiddo is the Hebrew name of Armageddon- to this day, no one has been able to translate the Byblos inscriptions). He was also an Exorcist and participated in over a hundred exorcisms. He was appointed as the Professor of Paleontology at the Pontifical Biblical Institute at The Vatican and was an advisor to Pope John XXIII.
After the Second Vatican Council he asked to be released from his vows because he disagreed with the modernization of the mass and other reforms, but Paul VI only relieved him of his duties and sent him to America. He believed in the Papal Prophecy of the 12th century Irish Archbishop, St. Malachy. It states that the next Pope- called Petrus Romanus by St. Malachy- will be the final Pope. Like the current Chief Exorcist of Rome, Father Gabriele Amorth, Malachi Martin believed that Satanists had infiltrated the Vatican. Before Martin died, he was summoned to Rome to have a private audience with John Paul II.
He was a pretty controversial figure in the Catholic Church. Some Catholics disagreed with Fr Martin- said he was just bitter b/c he didn’t like seeing the changes being made in the Novus Ordo Mass- but some Catholics agreed with him that changing the words of the rituals changed the rituals.— You can read his book about demonic possession in contemporary America here http://www.scribd.com/doc/30664982/Malachi-Martin-Hostage-to-the-Devil you can find an archive of interviews with him here https://www.youtube.com/user/MalachiMartinAudio/videos?view=1&flow=grid and you can learn even more about him here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malachi_Martin
